   College Goal Sunday Committee

 Purpose

The Committee is charged with developing and successfully implementing a one-day event that assists Massachusetts families to complete the FAFSA as the first step in applying for financial aid to attend college. The primary target participants for these free services are low-income, underserved and first-generation prospective college students and their families. The current structure for the operational plan calls for the coordination of a network of host sites at key locations around the state. Each site will be sufficiently staffed with experienced volunteers from MASFAA and partner organizations. Families will be able to obtain comprehensive instruction on FAFSA completion at each site and be able to discuss all aspects of the financial aid application process as it pertains to their unique situations. An extensive statewide promotional campaign, involving media, direct mail, presentations, and email, will precede the CGS event. The event will serve to increase access to college for targeted families by assisting them in successfully completing the critical initial stages of the financial aid process and equipping them with a more thorough understanding of the sources of available financial aid.

 Composition

The College Goal Sunday Steering Committee is co-chaired by three individuals appointed by the President of MASFAA. The Committee is comprised of a statewide volunteer coordinator, TRIO and GEAR UP ambassador, team leader for site coordinators, MASFAA members, and several members of community organizations that provide college access services to the target population. The co-chairs select these individuals with input from the MASFAA Executive Council and other members of the Committee. Members of this Committee should reflect the diversity of the targeted community.

 2009/2010 Objectives

  1. Review, assess, and confirm all statewide sites to host Massachusetts CGS. Add new sites as deemed necessary by the Committee. Twenty six sites were available in 2009 and there will be a few additional sites for 2010.
  2. Continue the development of a strategic plan to solicit long-term funding partners for CGS that will eventually supplement the minimum Lumina Continuation Grant funding and eventually the YMCA funding.
  3. Work with the current public relations consultants, The Castle Group, and the designated designer, Culp Designs, to promote the Mass. CGS brand identity and to maintain a consistent message and public image throughout all publications.
  4. Build on partnership with YMCA.
  5. Work with the Castle Group to successfully implement a comprehensive statewide media campaign during the months leading up to the January event.
  6. Work with site coordinators, TRIO, GEAR UP and other partner organizations to develop a public information campaign to reach families across the state.
  7. Continue to increase focus and attention on Hispanic families, families with incomes below $20,000 and nontraditional students.
  8. Increase the number of sites offering online access to promote filing of the FAFSA On The Web.
  9. Maintain Massachusetts College Goal Sunday web site.
  10. Develop awareness, enthusiasm, and volunteerism within MASFAA, partner organizations, and other key communities throughout the state, with particular emphasis on increasing the number of FAFSA expert volunteers.
  11. Recruit, train, and assign all needed volunteers to assure adequate staffing for all host sites.
  12. Develop all training materials, FAFSA presentation materials, and volunteer support materials that will be needed at each site, with particular emphasis on the significant changes in the 2010-11 FAFSA.
  13. Host the 2009-10 Massachusetts College Goal Sunday event on January 31, 2010. Review, evaluate, and report on the accomplishments of the event. Complete all necessary reporting information for the YMCA. Present recommendations to MASFAA Executive Council for the future continuation of Massachusetts College Goal Sunday.
